Cops’ action on allotment thefts leaves OAP fuming
SOPHIE SCOTT A pensioner is upset about how the police have dealt with a spate of thefts at allotments in which equipment worth £3,000 was stolen. George Clare, who is secretary of Luton Federation of Allotments, said incidents at around six sites have been reported to police but investigations ‘have not gone much further’. He [keep reading...]
Mediate – that is an order!
Jonathan Djanogly, Justice Minister, announced yesterday that a new protocol will come into effect in April that “requires [separating] couples to have at least one mediation awareness session”. Here’s the link – http://www.justice.gov.uk/news/announcement230211a.htm That sounds like such a good idea. And perhaps it is. Taking some of the acrimony out of divorce/separation surely is good. The language of the law
As lawyers we often forget how much of a barrier the language barrier is. Whilst I do wish to celebrate the UNESCO event for the 21st February each year – International Mother Language Day – I don’t feel completely comfortable that celebrating Mother Languages is always helpful to those groups in our society who need [keep reading...]
Event to mark International Mother Language Day
The Bangladeshi community in Bedford is holding an event today to mark International Mother Language Day. It’s being held at the community centre in Faraday Square off Kelvin Avenue, Bedford. There are various events including activities for children and they will also be planting a flower in memory of those who died. International Mother Language [keep reading...]
When law is tyranny – and when it is not
Freedom of expression, as we see in the MiddleEast and North African countries at this moment in time, is powerful. It changes societies. As Dr Who said to The Master (a psychopathic tyrant if ever there was one) – “whatever you do, you can’t stop them thinking”. Here’s a Mail Online article about The Master. [keep reading...]
So the wigs have it!
So, at last, the compensation claimers have failed! Is it possible? Could the old men in big wigs have got it right? Is this the beginning of the end of the reviled Compensation Culture? Has our Prime Minister by virtue of his moral righteousness begun to put our “broken society” (as he would have it) [keep reading...]
The bully-boy boss
So Mr Simon Cremer (the boss) of Essex thinks “it’s absolutely disgusting” that Mr Mark Gilbert (ex-employee) “was even able to sue me after he had stolen from me”. Here’s the link to The Telegraph’s report – http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/8327528/13000-for-thief-who-was-frogmarched-to-police-by-his-boss.html – you need to see the image. Whatever it was that Mr Gilbert (the ex-employee) did, being [keep reading...]
Counsel for the Councillor
I’m not quite sure how much sympathy we should have for Councillor Jenny Davies, Lib-Dem Councillor for Stopsley in Luton Borough Council. According to the Borough’s website she was first elected in 1983, so she’s an old hand at the local politics game. But her reply to an unsolicited email tends to suggest that whatever [keep reading...]
When will people be replaced by holograms?
It used to be one of those things about Lawyers that they were bookish. Which isn’t surprising, after all, Law is about words. And words used to reside in books – or some other form of print media. But words have moved on. And books seem ever less like books. And both books and words [keep reading...]
World-first holograms join Luton airport staff
Luton Airport has two new staff members – holograms who will give out security information to passengers. On Monday the airport launched ‘Holly’ and ‘Graham’ – who will be trialled as some of the world’s first holographic announcers. They will be employed to communicate important security messages as passengers pass from check-in to the departure [keep reading...]
